What Lies Beneath the Surface

Returning to the Ocean again was like greeting an old friend...

I recently returned from a trip to the ocean, and as I stood watching the waves roll in, I found myself thinking about how much of life exists beneath the surface...The ocean has a way of reminding us of that. We see the movement of the water, the reflections of light, the endless horizon stretching into the distance. But beneath what we can see is an entire world of currents, ecosystems, shifting sands, underwater landscapes, and depths that remain largely unexplored.

It made me wonder how often we forget this truth in our own lives. We live in a culture that is constantly focused on the surface, the outer appearance. We are shown the finished product, the highlight reel, the visible result. Yet nature operates differently. The Earth records its history in layers. Rivers carve stone over time. Roots grow unseen beneath forests. The most powerful forces are often the quietest ones.

The same is true for people. Our lives are shaped by the things that cannot always be seen...our values, our attention, our memories, our beliefs, and the stories we carry. What we nurture and give our attention to beneath the surface eventually finds its way into the world around us. Perhaps that is why I am so drawn to geological layers, water, and the landscapes that inspire my work. They remind me that depth is not something we achieve, but something we uncover. Something that has been there all along.

As I looked out over that beautiful deep blue ocean, it was like greeting an old friend. I was reminded that there is always more that lies beneath the surface than what first appears. More mystery. More beauty. More story.

The Earth knows this...The ocean knows this...and I believe if we listen closely enough,

perhaps we do too.
